Yugioh Dark Monsters

Updated on July 29, 2013

Yugioh DARK Monsters

DARK monsters are some of the strongest monsters in the entire game, and in my opinion, are by far the best monsters based on Attributes. These monsters have a perfect mix of high ATK and/or high DEF that goes along with a great effect. DARK monsters have unique effects, and most of them are powerhouses that are waiting to be added to your Deck. I have a DARK Deck, and it is by far the most successful Deck that I have. I want to show you some of the DARK monsters that can help your Decks.

Battle Fader

Although Battle Fader has only 0 ATK and 0 DEF, it can protect you from a lot of attacks. When an opponent's monster declares a direct attack, you can Special Summon this card from your hand and end the Battle Phase. Battle Fader is the newest version of Negate Attack except you get an extra monster. However, when Battle Fader is removed from the field, it is banished (only if it was Special Summoned by its own effect). Battle Fader's effect should not be overlooked because you get a monster on your side of the field via Special Summon, and you end an opponent's Battle Phase. Battle Fader is an awesome card that I would recommend for any Deck.

Grave Squirmer

Grave Squirmer has 0 ATK and 0 DEF with a good effect. When Grave Squirmer is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, Grave Squirmer allows you to target and destroy 1 card on the field (Monster, Spell, or Trap). You can destroy anything you want when Grave Squirmer is sent to the Graveyard by battle.

Kuriboh

Kuriboh is a classic Yugioh card that was used ever since the game of Yugioh was introduced. Kuriboh is a furry Level 1 monster with 300 ATK and 200 DEF. Multiply and Detonate are some cards that work well with Kuriboh, or you can keep it in your hand. When you would lose life points from a battle, you can discard Kuriboh to make any of that Battle Damage beome 0 from that battle.

Obsidian Dragon

You can't have an amazing DARK Deck without Obsidian Dragon. Obsidian Dragon only has 800 ATK, but a bulky 2100 DEF. When a Spell or Trap Card targets 1 of your DARK monsters, you can have Obsidian Dragon negate and destroy those cards. Anything that targets is destroyed. Change of Heart targets, Trap Hole targets, and even Draining Shield targets your DARK monsters. Well, with Obsidian Dragon and a DARK Deck, half of your opponent's Spell and Trap Cards most likely won't be able to do anything right now.

Jinzo

Jinzo has 2400 ATK and 1500 DEF and one of the best effects in the game. When Jinzo is on the field, all Trap Card's effects are negated and neither player can activate Trap Cards. If you want to neutralize your opponent's best source of protection, then use Jinzo, but be aware that you cannot use Trap Cards either. If you have the Equip Spell Card Amplifier, you will then be able to use Trap Cards. Preventing your opponent from using Trap Cards will allow you to be able to attack your opponent without worrying about any surprises.

Yu-Gi-Oh! - Jinzo PSV-000 Secret Rare - Pharoah's Servant
Yu-Gi-Oh! - Jinzo PSV-000 Secret Rare - Pharoah's Servant
This card negates all Trap Card effects and prevents other Trap Cards from being activated.

This card can protect you from a direct attack and end the Battle Phase. You also get to Special Summon this card to your side of the field.

Yu-Gi-Oh! - Kuriboh (SYE-019) - Starter Deck Yugi Evolution - 1st Edition - Common
Yu-Gi-Oh! - Kuriboh (SYE-019) - Starter Deck Yugi Evolution - 1st Edition - Common
You can protect yourself from losing any life points from 1 battle by discarding this card from your hand to the Graveyard.

Pitch-Black Warwolf

Jinzo is expensive for a Yugioh Card, and some people might not want to spend so much money for an awesome card. That is why Pitch-Black Warwolf is here, because it is similar to Jinzo. Pitch-Black Warwolf is easier to play since it is a Level 4, and it has 1600 ATK and 1000 DEF. During the Battle Phase, your opponent cannot activate Trap Cards. That is awesome because when one of your monsters declares an attack, your opponent is unable to use Trap Cards, but you have that second option of using one just in case. However, your opponent can still use Trap Cards during his/her Standby Phase, Main Phase, and Main Phase 2.

Dark Armed Dragon

Dark Armed Dragon is a Level 7 DARK Dragon-Type monster with 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF. You cannot Normal Summon or Set Dark Armed Dragon, and you can only Special Summon Dark Armed Dragon from your hand when you have exactly 3 DARK monsters in your Graveyard. You can banish 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard to destroy 1 card on the field.

Drillago

Drillago is a Level 4 DARK Machine-Type monster with 1600 ATK and 1100 DEF. If your opponent controls monsters with 1600 ATK or more, then Drillago can attack your opponent's life points directly. Drillago can't attack directly if your opponent has any face-up monster on his/her side of the field with less than 1600 ATK.

Red Dragon Archfiend

Red Dragon Archfiend is a Level 8 DARK Dragon-Type Synchro Monster with 3000 ATK and 2000 DEF. When Red Dragon Archfiend attacks a Defense Position monster, then all Defense Position monsters are destroyed. Red Dragon Archfiend allows you to cruise through your opponent's monsters, but it comes with a price. When Red Dragon Archfiend is on your side of the field, all monsters you control must attack or else they are destroyed during the End Phase. Red Dragon Archfiend is only fit for a Deck and field with monsters that have high ATK. A strategic Deck with cards like Marshmallon won't make the cut for Red Dragon Archfiend.

Cyber Jar

Cyber Jar is a Level 3 DARK monster with 900 ATK and 900 DEF. Cyber Jar has an interesting FLIP Effect that destroys all monsters on the field similar to a Dark Hole. The difference is that both players draw 5 cards (I know the term is picked up, but you draw them in the end). If you have any Level 4 or lower monsters from those 5 cards that you just picked up/drew, you can Special Summon them to your side of the field. Like I said, the other cards are added to your hand like a draw. Cyber Jar's effect has a miscellaneous result, but it is a fun card to use.

The Wicked Avatar

The Wicked Avatar will always have 100 ATK and 100 DEF more than the strongest monster on the field making The Wicked Avatar always be the strongest monster on the field. Your opponent cannot activate any Spell or Trap Cards until the second turn after you play The Wicked Avatar, but getting it on the field can prove to be a challenge. The Wicked Avatar is a Level 10 DARK Fiend-Type monster that cannot be Special Summoned, and you must Tribute 3 monsters in order to play The Wicked Avatar. It may be hard to play, but the rewards are high.

Rainbow Dark Dragon

Rainbow Dark Dragon is one of the strongest monsters in the game with 4000 ATK, but a low 0 DEF. Rainbow Dark Dragon is a Level 10 DARK Dragon-Type monster with hard summoning conditions that produce great rewards. You must have 7 or more DARK monsters in your Graveyard to Special Summon Rainbow Dark Dragon from your hand, and you cannot Normal Summon or Set Rainbow Dark Dragon. You must banish 7 DARK monsters from your Graveyard to Special Summon this special dragon, and with 4000 ATK, Rainbow Dark Dragon will overpower most if not all of your opponent's monsters.

Dark Valkyria

Dark Valkyria is a Level 4 DARK Gemini and Fairy-Type monster with 1800 ATK and 1050 DEF. Those are high stats, and when you Gemini Summon Dark Valkyria, you can place 1 Spell Counter on this card, but you can only do that once and the max is 1. Dark Valkyria gains 300 ATK because of the Spell Counter, and you can remove it from Dark Valkyria to destroy 1 monster on the field.

Breaker The Magical Warrior

Breaker The Magical Warrior is a Level 4 DARK Spellcaster-Type monster with 1600 ATK and 1000 DEF. When Breaker is Normal Summoned, it gets a Spell Counter (max 1), and it gains 300 ATK for that Spell Counter. You can remove 1 Spell Counter from Breaker to destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on the field, and with 1600 ATK, Breaker can overpower most Level 4 and lower monsters anyway.

Malefic Stardust Dragon

Malefic Stardust Dragon is one of the easiest to play monsters in the entire game, and even though it has no special effect, Malefic Stardust Dragon does give you the quick ATK that can overpower a lot of your opponent's monsters. Malefic Stardust Dragon is a Level 8 DARK Dragon-Type monster with 2500 ATK and 2000 DEF. Malefic Stardust Dragon needs a Field Spell Card on the field, or else it is destroyed, and this card is the only monster that you control that can declare an attack. However, all you need to do to Special Summon Malefic Stardust Dragon is have a face-up Field Spell Card and banish 1 Stardust Dragon FROM YOUR EXTRA DECK which is very easy since Stardust Dragon starts out in the Extra Deck. When Malefic Stardust Dragon is on the field, Field Spell Cards cannot be destroyed by effects of any kind.

Dark Grepher

I never saw Dark Grepher's potential until I looked hard at its effect and saw what it could do for my DARK Deck. My DARK Deck is very solid, but I rarely get 7 DARK monsters to my Graveyard, so Rainbow Dark Dragon isn't an option. I don't want to put Painful Choice into that Deck because it has too many good cards, but then I saw Dark Grepher. Dark Grepher is a Level 4 DARK monster with 1700 ATK and 1600 DEF that can be Special Summoned from your hand if you discard 1 Level 5 or higher DARK monster. Once per turn, you can discard 1 DARK monster from your hand to select 1 DARK monster from your Deck and send it to the Graveyard. Now, how does that help? This Yugioh Card came in the Phantom of Darkness booster pack, so it was the perfect addition to any DARK Deck which allows you to easily Special Summon DARK monsters that rely on having DARK monsters in your Graveyard. I will show more monsters that can be greatly helped by Dark Grepher.

Dark Nephthys

Dark Nephthys is a Level 8 DARK monster with 2400 ATK and 1600 DEF that would greatly benefit from Dark Grepher. When Dark Nephthys is in your hand and you have 3 or more DARK monsters in your Graveyard, you can use this card's effect. You can banish 2 of those DARK monsters to send this card to the Graveyard. When sent to the Graveyard by this method, you can Special Summon Dark Nephthys from your Graveyard during your next Standby Phase. When you Special Summon Dark Nephthys this way, you can destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on the field.

The Dark Creator

The Dark Creator is a Level 7 DARK Thunder-Type monster with 2300 ATK and 3000 DEF. You can only Special Summon The Dark Creator if you have 5 DARK monsters in your Graveyard. None of them are banished, but you can banish 1 DARK monster in your Graveyard to Special Summon 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard. Building up an army of DARK monsters couldn't be easier, but you can only Special Summon this card when you control no monsters at all.

Swarm of Scarabs

Swarm of Scarabs is a Level 3 monster with 500 ATK and 1000 DEF that can be flipped to face-down Defense Position once per turn. When Swarm of Scarabs is Flip Summoned successfully, you can destroy 1 monster that your opponent controls. Swarm of Scarabs can be flipped face-up and then flipped back face-down at the same time since each Monster Card is allowed up to 2 movements per turn.

Swarm of Locusts

If you have Swarm of Scarabs in your Deck, then you need a Swarm of Locusts as well. Swarm of Locusts has 1000 ATK and 500 DEF, and like Swarm of Scarabs, this card can be flipped to face-down Defense Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When Swarm of Locusts is Flip Summoned successfully, you can destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on your opponent's side of the field. Swarm of Scarabs and Swarm of Locusts are like a double threat that if combined will result in you destroying 1 monster and 1 Spell or Trap Card that your opponent controls every turn!

Dark Horus

Dark Horus is a Level 8 DARK monster with 3000 ATK and 1800 DEF that can give you a DARK monster army! Once per turn, when a Spell Card is activated during your opponent's Main Phase, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 DARK monster from your Graveyard. With 3000 ATK, Dark Horus will be hard to destroy, and you'll make your opponent think twice about activating Spell/Trap Cards.

Witch's Apprentice

Witch's Apprentice is a Level 2 monster with 550 ATK and 500 DEF that isn't as weak as it seems. When Witch's Apprentice is on your side of the field, all DARK monsters gain 500 ATK while all LIGHT monsters lose 400 ATK. If you want to make your DARK monsters stronger, then use Witch's Apprentice.

Dark Blade The Captain of the Evil World

Dark Blade The Captain of the Evil World is a Level 4 monster with 1800 ATK and 1500 DEF that is designed to be a LIGHT Deck torturer. Once per turn, you can banish 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard to equip 1 Level 4 or lower LIGHT on your opponent's side of the field to this card. When Dark Blade The Captain of the Evil World would be destroyed, the monster equipped to this card is destroyed instead. When the equip monster is destroyed, then you can use Dark Blade The Captain of the Evil World's effect again.

Swift Gaia The Fierce Knight

If you have a Gaia The Fierce Knight in your Deck, then this is the card to replace it with. Just like the original, Swift Gaia The Fierce Knight has 2300 ATK and 2100 DEF, but if you control no monsters, Swift Gaia The Fierce Knight can be Summoned from your hand in face-up Attack Position.

Dark Magician of Chaos

Dark Magician of Chaos is a Level 8 monster with 2800 ATK and 2600 DEF that allows you to add 1 Spell Card from your Graveyard to your hand when it is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned. Any monster destroyed by battle because of Dark Magician of Chaos is banished. When Dark Magician of Chaos is removed from the field (not only destroyed), it is banished.

Old Vindictive Magician

Old Vindictive Magician is a Level 2 monster with 450 ATK and 600 DEF that when flipped allows you to destroy 1 monster your opponent controls. Old Vindictive Magician may not be the strongest DARK monster, but with a nasty effect, it can take out any monster that you desire.

Magical Marionette

Magical Marionette is a Level 5 monster with 2000 ATK and 1000 DEF that gets a Spell Counter each time a Spell Card is activated. Magical Marionette gains 200 ATK for each Spell Counter, and there is not a maximum number of Spell Counters which is to your advantage. You can remove 2 Spell Counters from Magical Marionette to destroy 1 monster on the field which means if 2 Spell Cards are activated, you can also destroy an opponent's monster.

Berserk Dragon

Berserk Dragon is a Level 8 monster with 3500 ATK and 0 DEF that cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Berserk Dragon cannot be Special Summoned except by the effect of A Deal With Dark Ruler. Berserk Dragon can attack all of your opponent's monsters once each, but Berserk Dragon cannot attack your opponent's life points directly. During each of your End Phases, Berserk Dragon loses 500 ATK, so make sure you use Berserk Dragon while you can.

Diabolos King of the Abyss

Diabolos King of the Abyss is a Level 7 monster with 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF that cannot be Special Summoned, cannot be Tribute Summoned unless the Tributes are DARK, and Diabolos King of the Abyss cannot be used as a Tribute for a card effect. With Diabolos King of the Abyss, you can see the top card of your opponent's Deck during the opponent's Draw Phase. You can either return that card to the top of the Deck (if it is bad) or the bottom of the Deck (if it is really good).

Vampire Genesis

Vampire Genesis is a Level 8 monster with 3000 ATK and 2100 DEF that cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Vampire Genesis can only be Special Summoned by banishing 1 Vampire Lord on your side of the field. You can discard 1 Zombie-Type monster from your hand to your Graveyard to Special Summon 1 Zombie-Type monster from your Graveyard with a Level less than the discarded Zombie-Type monster. This effect can only be used once per turn, but if you have a lot of Zombie-Type monsters in your Deck, then Vampire Genesis is the right card for you.

Archfiend Empress

Archfiend Empress is a Level 8 DARK monster with 2900 ATK and 2100 DEF. If 1 face-up Field-Type monster on the field other than this card would be destroyed, you can banish 1 DARK Field-Type monster from your Graveyard instead of having that DARK Field-Type monster on your side of the field get destroyed. This effect can only be applied if exactly 1 face-up DARK Field-Type monster would be destroyed (by battle or by a card effect), so Archfiend Empress couldn't negate a Dark Hole which would destroy more than 1 monster on the field. When Archfiend Empress is destroyed, you can Special Summon 1 Level 6 or higher DARK Field-Type monster in your Graveyard except for Archfiend Empress. This allows you to have a strong monster on your side of the field for a very long time.

Ape Fighter

Ape Fighter is a Level 4 monster with 1900 ATK and 1200 DEF. When Ape Fighter destroys an opponent's monster by battle, it gains 300 ATK. Since Ape Fighter already has 1900 ATK, destroying a monster would bring it up to 2200 ATK which is the ATK values that a duelist would expect to find in a Level 5 monster. However, if Ape Fighter does not attack during your turn, Ape Fighter's ATK loses all of the ATK that it gained from its effect. If you want to make Ape Fighter really strong, you have to keep on attacking or go back to square one.

Barrier Statue of the Abyss

Barrier Statue of the Abyss is a great card to have in a DARK Deck because it restricts monsters other than DARK monsters from being Special Summoned. This Level 4 monster may not by the strongest with only 1000 ATK and 1000 DEF, but Barrier Statue of the Abyss prevents your opponent from Special Summoning monsters other than DARK monsters. You can't avoid this effect either, but if Barrier Statue of the Abyss is in a DARK Deck, then all of the monsters are DARK monsters which means Barrier Statue of the Abyss's effect won't affect you in any way.

Colossal Fighter/Assault Mode

Colossal Fighter/Assault Mode is a Level 10 monster with 3300 ATK and 1500 DEF that cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Colossal Fighter/Assault Mode cannot be Special Summoned except with Assault Mode Active, a Trap Card that moves some Synchro Monsters to the next level. This card is basically the stronger version of Colossal Fighter with an even better effect. When Colossal Fighter/Assault Mode is Special Summoned, you can send up to 2 Warrior-Type monster from your Deck to the Graveyard. Instead of gaining 100 ATK for each Warrior-Type monster in your Graveyard, Colossal Fighter/Assault Mode makes all of your opponent's monsters lose 100 ATK for each Warrior-Type monster in your Graveyard. If you have a Deck filled with Warrior-Type monsters, your opponent's monsters will be losing a lot of ATK points thus making them very vulnerable.

Double Coston

Double Coston is a Level 4 monster with 1700 ATK and 1650 DEF that can be treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a DARK monster. Double Coston gives you more flexibility in terms of Tribute Summoning because for Level 7 or higher monsters such as Dark Horus, you only need to Tribute 1 monster instead of 2 monsters which reduces the number of Monster Cards on your side of the field.

Bacon Saver

Bacon Saver is a Level 2 monster with 700 ATK and 600 DEF that you can banish from your Graveyard during either player's Battle Step to negate the attack of 1 monster on the field. This effect can be applied to an opponent's monster who is attacking one of your weaker monsters, or it can be applied when one of your monsters attacks one of your opponent's stronger monsters. Bacon Saver can save you from losing a lot of damage or losing your best monster.

Chaos Sorcerer

Chaos Sorcerer has 2300 ATK and 2000 DEF, and it cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Chaos Sorcerer cannot be Special Summoned except by banishing 2 monsters (1 LIGHT and 1 DARK) from your Graveyard. This summoning requirement is easy to accomplish, and you can banish 1 face-up monster on the field once per turn with Chaos Sorcerer. On the turn you use this effect, Chaos Sorcerer cannot declare an attack, but with this effect, you can make way for all of your other monsters to attack your opponent's life points directly.

Strike Ninja

Strike Ninja has with 1700 ATK and 1200 DEF, and it can be banished by banishing 2 DARK monsters in your Graveyard. If Strike Ninja is banished by its own effect, it is Special Summoned to your side of the field during the End Phase. This effect can only be used once per turn, but it has many benefits. If you are using a card such as Torrential Tribute that destroys all monsters on the field, you can banish this card so it is not destroyed by Torrential Tribute. Then Strike Ninja will return back to your side of the field during the End Phase while your opponent will have no monsters left on his/her side of the field.
